TRAINING AND CAPACITY BUILDING ACTIVITIES OF CHAP IN 2003

 

          Childhope Asia Philippines (CHAP) promotes human resource development through training and capacity-building activities that it conducts among staff and volunteers of NGOs in the Philippines and in other Asian countries.  The following workshops and field visits were conducted by CHAP in collaboration with its partner donors and agencies:

INDONESIAN FIELD STUDY VISIT 

On Oct. 1-2, seven (7) officials of the Indonesian Ministry of Social Welfare, the Sulawesi Department of Social Welfare, and two (2) NGOs participated in a Field Study Visit of programs of CHAP, Families and Children for Empowerment and Development (FCED), and the Tahanan Sta. Luisa Crisis Intervention Center for Street Girls and Sexually-exploited Girls (TSL).  Their mentor, Dr. Judith Ennew, and two (2) representatives from the Department of Interior and Local Government, coordinator of the FSV, accompanied the visitors during the agency visits.

CHINESE PROGRAM STUDY VISIT AND TRAINING WORKSHOP

From Nov. 17-25, eight (8) government and non-government staff from the People's Republic of China participated in a study visit-workshop sponsored by UNICEF-Beijing and organized by CHAP.  The theme of the activity was Psychosocial Response Support for Children in Difficult Circumstances.  Six (6) of the participants went on a two-day visit of natural disaster programs in Pampanga and Bulacan while the rest visited street children programs of CHAP, FCED, TSL, Creating Responsive Infants by Sharing (CRIBS), Pangarap Shelter for Boys, and Nayon ng Kabataan.

          Ten (10) country-level workshops were conducted in Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, and the Philippines.  The workshops had the following themes:

1. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF FAMILY COUNSELING AMONG STREET CHILDREN (Jan. 19-23, Jakarta)

 Conducted in coordination with the Indonesian Child Welfare Foundation (ICWF) and supported by Kinderen in de Knel.  Main facilitator was Atty. Eugenia Jamias, CHAP Vice-chairperson.  Twenty-six (26) participants from various organizations involved in street children programs participated.

2. INTERVENTION PROGRAMS FOR THE STREET GIRL-CHILD: FOCUSING ON CHILD'S RIGHTS AND EMPOWERMENT, RECOVERY, AND PROTECTION (Aug. 30-Sept. 4, Medan)

Supported by Kinderen in de Knel and coordinated by Yayasan KKSP. The workshop was attended by twenty-five (25) participants and facilitated by Ms. Nancyline Agaid, Program Manager for CHAP's Street Education Program.

3. CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE AND EXPLOITATION: PREVENTION AND BASIC PSYCHOSOCIAL INTERVENTIONS (Feb. 18-22, Chennai; July 20-24, Dhaka)

In India, the workshop for twenty-six (26) participants was coordinated by the Madras NGO Forum for Street Children and Don Bosco Anbu Illam.  In Bangladesh, Aparajeyo collaborated with CHAP in organizing the workshop for 27 participants.  Ms. Agaid facilitated both workshops for Kinderen in de Knel.

4. TRAINING FOR HOUSE PARENTS ON THERAPEUTIC CARE FOR CHILDREN IN NEED OF SPECIAL PROTECTION (Jan. 6-10, Gen. Santos City, the Philippines)

CHAP partnered with the Department of Social Welfare and Development-Local Government Unit in Gen. Santos City in organizing this workshop.  It was jointly supported by the Filipino Pipe and Foundry Corporation.  Atty. Jamias facilitated the workshop for twenty (20) participants from different government and non-government agencies.

5. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF STREET EDUCATION (June 15-21, Cebu City, the Philippines)

The Department of Interior and Local Governments (DILG) provided support for this workshop for forty-eight (48) participants.  Ms. Agaid was the resource person. 

6. THE UN-CRC AND RELATED LAWS (July 21-23, Tacloban City, the Philippines)

With support from PLAN International-Philippines, this workshop was conducted for thirty (30) participants representing Plan International-Philippines, the Department of Education, and local government units (LGUs).  Atty. Jamias was the resource person.

7. METHODS OF CONDUCTING ADVOCACY ON CRC AMONG SK CHILD AND YOUTH LEADERS (Aug. 18-20, Cagayan de Oro City, the Philippines)

UNICEF-Manila provided support for this workshop for twenty-five (25) Sangguniang Kabataan Leaders from the National Capital Region, Visayas, and Mindanao as participants.  Ms. Agaid was the resource person.

8. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF CONDUCTING ADVOCACY ON CRC AMONG PARENT LEADERS (Sept. 10-12, Manila)

PLAN International-Philippines supported the conduct of this workshop, which was organized by CHAP for the Philippine NGO Coalition on the CRC.  Thirty-two (32) participants represented eight (8) member NGOs of the Coalition.  Ms. Agaid was the resource person.

9. TRAINING WORKSHOP OF GIRL-CHILD ADVOCATES ON CRC AND GENDER SENSITIVITY (Nov. 10-13, Iloilo City, the Philippines)

The DSWD Region VI Field Office was the host partner agency of CHAP for this training workshop facilitated by Ms. Agaid.  The thirty (30) participants were from the cities/provinces of Guimaras, Capiz, Antique, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Aklan.  UNICEF-Manila provided support.
